He was also a member of the North-South Shrine football team.

After high school, Mr. Buchanan attended Arizona State University where he was named to the National Backfield of the Week after a 1969 Sun Devils' victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers.  He was the 1969 WAC Offensive Player of the Year.

Undrafted by the National Football League, he signed with the Cincinnati Bengals. Instead of being on the "Taxi-Squad" with the Bengals, Mr. Buchanan opted to play for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.

In 1972, Mr. Buchanan earned All Eastern Conference  and All Canadian honors in the CFL.  He was also "Back of the Year."  He sat out the 1973 season because of a contract dispute before ultimately retiring in 1975.

In 1979, as a special assistant to the head coach at Verbum Dei High School, Mr. Buchanan helped foster the "Impulse Snap System."   It resulted in the Eagles earning a 31-15-1 record and back-to-back CIF Championships over 4 seasons.
