Wiggins was full of promise, but he was arrested on cocaine possession charges in 1982, just after the All-Star break. After going through drug rehab, Alan earned the lead-off spot for the Padres the next season and stole 66 bases while batting .276.

In the 1984 National League Championship Series against the Chicago Cubs, Alan batted .316 and scored two runs in the decisive 5th game.

In the 1984 World Series Mr. Wiggins batted .364 in a losing effort.

The next season Alan had a relapse with his cocaine dependency problem and he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles. Wiggins had a couple of average seasons with the Orioles, but was never the same. He was released after the 1987 season.

Wiggins fought drug dependency until he died in a hospital in Los Angeles on January 6, 1991, reportedly of complications stemming from AIDS.

His Daughter, Candice Wiggins, is a basketball player for the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA.

He was released by the Angels after two mediocre seasons, but was picked up by the Los Angeles Dodgers and stole 120 bases for the Lodi Dodgers in 1980. He was then drafted by the San Diego Padres in the rule 5 draft.
